Lab Medicine 2019, the 54th annual meeting of the Academy of Clinical Laboratory Physicians and Scientists (ACLPS), will be held May 30 – June 1, 2019, at the Little America Hotel in Salt Lake City, Utah. The 2019 annual meeting is organized by our local hosts at the University of Utah / ARUP Laboratories. Please join us for an outstanding scientific program, including cutting-edge Young Investigator presentations, an awards banquet at the stunning Natural History Museum of Utah, and a tour of nearby ARUP Laboratories! A special Saturday afternoon educational session will be held for interested trainees at no additional cost, and will focus on high-yield topics in microbiology and infectious disease.

Educational Short Courses
June 1, 2019, 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Faculty: Marc R. Couturier, PhD, D(ABMM) and Patricia R. Slev, PhD, DABCC
This course will focus on infectious disease/serology in two parts. Dr. Couturier will cover routine diagnostic Parasitology and Gastrointestinal Pathogen detection. Dr. Slev will review Hepatitis and HIV. The four-hour session will include time for questions and discussion.
Training Residents in Genomics (TRIG) Workshop
Next-generation sequencing methods and multi-gene panels have entered clinical care. Regardless of specialty, genomic medicine is becoming an important part of pathology practice. Using a case-based, interactive small-group approach, workshop participants will learn introductory principles related to the development of assays and interpretation of results with a focus on cancer genomics. The workshop will also include practical hands-on instruction with the use of online genomic pathology tools. Members of a national genomics education committee who are experts in molecular pathology, medical education, and genetic counseling have developed the session (www.pathologylearning.org/trig).

Travel and Accommodations
The Salt Lake International Airport is a Delta Airlines hub and also is served by United, American, Southwest, JetBlue, Alaska, and Frontier. The airport is less than a 15 minute drive from downtown Salt Lake City. Uber and Lyft both operate in Salt Lake City. As an even more convenient and inexpensive option, the TRAX/light rail train (Green Line) leaves from the airport every 15 minutes on weekdays and every 20 minutes on weekends and stops right across the street from the conference hotel at the Courthouse Station, in slightly over 20 minutes!

Events and Activities
The Thursday evening welcome reception will be held on an outdoor terrace at the Little America Hotel. The Friday evening awards banquet will be held at the award-winning Natural History Museum of Utah overlooking the Salt Lake valley as the sun sets over the Oquirrh Mountains. Tours of ARUP Laboratories will be scheduled before the banquet on Friday.
Exploring Salt Lake City and Utah
The Little America Hotel is located in the heart of downtown Salt Lake City. In walking distance are Temple Square, City Creek Center, and numerous restaurants, bars, and performing arts theaters. Salt Lake City is home to the Utah Jazz NBA basketball team, the Salt Lake Bees minor league baseball team, and Real Salt Lake professional soccer. Trax light rail is free within the downtown zone.
Attendees who have extra time may consider enjoying the many other attractions in Utah. A 45-minute drive up Parley’s Canyon is Park City, home of world class skiing and outdoor adventures. While the ski season will be over, late spring (May and June) in Park City is ideal for browsing shops along historic Main Street, dining in unique restaurants, exploring hiking trails, and mountain biking. Other outdoor adventures within an hour driving distance include visiting the Great Salt Lake at Antelope Island and exploring Timpanogos Cave in American Fork Canyon. The Bonneville Salt Flats are within a two-hour drive. For those interested in more ambitious trips, Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, and Zion Nation Park are all within 5 hours drive from Salt Lake City.
