The Department of Pathology & Immunology at Washington University School of Medicine (WUSM) in St. Louis is inviting applications for a faculty member in the Transfusion Medicine/HLA section of the Division of Laboratory & Genomic Medicine (LGM) at the Assistant/Associate Professor level.
Position Summary:
We are seeking a highly motivated faculty member who will contribute to our tripartite mission of clinical service, research, and education within the LGM Division. Responsibilities at Barnes-Jewish Hospital (BJH) include attending on adult transfusion medicine service and coverage of hemostasis service. The position is amenable to faculty with a wide variety of additional clinical interests. Training of pathology residents and fellows is an essential component of this position. Additional responsibilities will include education of clinical pathology residents, blood banking and transfusion medicine fellows, medical students, and medical technologists. The individual will participate in clinical, translational, or basic science research activities. Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with experience.
Education and Expectations:
Candidates must possess a M.D. or D.O. and be board-certified or board-eligible in Transfusion Medicine. A successful candidate will have experience in clinical and laboratory aspects of transfusion medicine including apheresis, blood banking and cellular therapies, serum protein electrophoresis, hemostasis testing, and validation and implementation of new laboratory methods. Other desired attributes include excellent interpersonal skills, enthusiasm for teaching, and a collaborative attitude.
The Department: The Department of Pathology & Immunology excels in basic and clinical research as well as delivery of outstanding surgical pathology and laboratory medicine services to our patients and colleagues. The Department has an ACGME accredited Anatomic and Clinical pathology residency program and multiple fellowships, including a Blood Banking and Transfusion Medicine fellowship. There are four divisions: Immunobiology, Laboratory and Genomic Medicine, Anatomic and Molecular Pathology, and Neuropathology (http://pathology.wustl.edu/).
The Division: The Division of Laboratory & Genomic Medicine in the Department of Pathology & Immunology is a fast-paced and dynamic home to faculty with diverse clinical and research interests, and has a long record of innovation, research, and scholarship (https://pathology.wustl.edu/divisions/lgm/).
The Academic Medical Campus and Hospitals: BJH is a 1250 bed tertiary care hospital affiliated with Washington University School of Medicine (WUSM). BJH serves a diverse patient population, including a large cell therapy program (500+/year), solid organ (kidney, liver, lung, heart, pancreas) transplantation service, Level I trauma center, high risk obstetrics (including neonatal workups), and cardiovascular surgery service. The transfusion medicine service includes a blood bank, which transfuses over 90,000 components annually, an apheresis center providing approximately 4,000 therapeutic procedures per year, and a cellular therapy laboratory serving a large hematopoietic stem cell transplant service. BJWCH, located 14 miles from BJH and the academic medical campus, is a 100 bed community hospital undergoing rapid expansion of WUSM subspecialty medical and surgical in-patient and out-patient services, with close collaboration with BJH and other BJC system hospitals. Serum protein electrophoresis and hemostasis testing is performed in the BJH Core Laboratory, which is located in a state-of-the art facility, equipped with laboratory automation for routine coagulation testing as well as specialized instruments and technologists to perform complex hemostasis testing. The laboratory delivers services in benign and malignant hematology, disorders of hemostasis, and specialized testing for associated diseases (https://www.barnesjewish.org/). The School: U.S. News & World Report ranks WUSM among the top five medical schools in the nation and first in academic selectivity. Eighteen Nobel laureates have trained, taught, or carried out research here. Thirteen faculty members are fellows of the prestigious National Academy of Sciences, and 24 belong to its Institute of Medicine.
