Paul E. Strandjord Young Investigator Awards

Eligibility

The purpose of this program is to encourage young investigators to consider a career in academic laboratory medicine.

  • Residents, fellows, and doctoral scientists actively training in programs in the health sciences who have participated in research with a member of ACLPS, or who are sponsored by an ACLPS member, are eligible for the Paul E. Strandjord Young Investigator Award Program. Individuals holding a faculty appointment, including Instructor, are not eligible to receive a young investigator award, unless they are also still in training (i.e., a clinical Instructor doing a concurrent research fellowship is eligible).

  • Students in health science programs who have conducted research with an ACLPS member, or who are sponsored by an ACLPS member, may also be considered for the Young Investigator Awards.

  • To receive an award, the young investigator must be the presenter and must still be in training at the time of presentation at the annual meeting. A sponsoring ACLPS member must verify the eligibility of the young investigator.

Nature of the Awards

The Executive Council of ACLPS establishes the number of awards and the amount of each award to be given annually. The Executive Council has authorized up to 20 awards this year. Up to 2 additional awards may be granted specifically for undergraduate, MD, PhD, or MD/PhD students. Each awardee attends the meeting as a guest of the Academy (costs for registration, banquet, reception, breakfasts and lunches during the annual meeting are paid by ACLPS), and is reimbursed for travel and lodging expenses up to a maximum of $750 in accordance with the ACLPS Travel and Reimbursement policy.

Three "Awards with Distinction" will be granted to particularly outstanding submissions. Abstracts that are selected to contend for the Awards with Distinction will be identified during the initial abstract review. The young investigators who are selected will all present their work during the same presentation session at the meeting. Awards with Distinction will be granted in two different content areas: basic scientific discovery and clinical/translational science.

One "Early Bird" Award will be granted to the author of the earliest completed submission that is accepted to the meeting.

Method of Selection

A committee of senior ACLPS members will review and grade each abstract in advance of the meeting. To ensure fairness, all reviewers are blinded to the identity of the authors and the institution where the work was done and do not review papers that originate from their institutions. This blinded peer review process will be the basis for selection of abstracts for awards.

A second committee of senior ACLPS members will attend and judge the Award with Distinction presentations. No judges will have affiliations with the presenters or with their institutions.
